Over 40 Years of God’s Amazing Grace
Greater Glory Church of God (“Greater Glory”) is a faith community of believers, committed to making disciples of all people for God’s glory. Located in Philadelphia, PA, the impact of Greater Glory is felt beyond the walls of its physical structure, spilling into the surrounding communities and reaching across the globe to the Caribbean and Africa. Greater Glory is a part of the international Church of God denomination, headquartered in Cleveland, Tennessee.
From humble origins, Greater Glory Church of God has transitioned from glory to glory. It all started in August 1981 when the late Bishop Jabez Barrett founded the Bryn Mawr Avenue New Testament Church of God along with twenty members. For several years, the church shared worship space with the First Haitian Church of God, which was then located at 55th Street and Lansdowne Avenue. As the church continued to pray and believe God for a permanent home, the Lord opened a door for the acquisition of 1997 N. 63rd Street & Woodbine Ave. Many recall this august moment as Bishop Barrett led the congregation into laying hands on the building and believing God for it. It was a very interesting scene to observe this vibrant group of believers laying hands on the building and calling on God to grant them favor. God certainly heard their prayers and Watchnight Service was held in the newly acquired building on December 31, 1981.
Because of Bishop Barrett’s obedience and service to the Lord, the membership continued to increase, and several auxiliaries were organized. Bishop Jabez Barrett, supported by his late wife, Sis. Inez Barrett and members labored for the Lord as they sought to fulfill the Great Commission.
Indeed, God has brought Greater Glory a “mighty long way”. Under the leadership of its current Pastors, Bishop Dennis and Pastor Uannie Walton, Greater Glory has cultivated a space where people from all nations can experience a transformational encounter with the Lord Jesus Christ. As an international church with over 20 countries represented in its congregation, Greater Glory has conducted missions in the local Philadelphia community, as well as in the Caribbean and Africa with several churches in Jamaica and Kenya receiving substantial support for their church buildings and furnishings. Greater Glory Church of God is a missional church that also extends support to several churches in Philadelphia, New York, New Jersey, and Florida. The church has come to be known for its warmth & hospitality, dynamic worship, commitment to youth mentorship & development, enriching the lives of the elderly, and its community outreach efforts.
Truly, Greater Glory is the church where everybody is a somebody and the ground is level at the foot of the Cross!
